Many
pharmaceutical distributors have adopted new industry guidelines
for pharmaceutical distribution system integrity in addition
to maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.
Meanwhile, states are revising regulations and manufacturers
are updating requirements. In 2004, the National Association
of Boards of Pharmacy (http://www.nabp.net) launched its Verified-Accredited
Wholesale Distributors™ (VAWD™) program as a voluntary initiative
to assist states in inspecting distributors. All of these changes
are requiring wholesalers and specialty distributors to not only
change their operations, but also document those changes for
their trading partners and regulators.
In November, 2004, Carmen
Catizone, the NABP's Executive Director stated, "NABP recognizes
that a critical component of the VAWD program is an effective
educational program for the personnel of wholesale distributors
and is appreciative of Health Pathways' foresight in developing
such a program to respond to a market need. NABP has discussed
the VAWD program with Health Pathways and is impressed with the
